Should All Christians Speak in Tongues? In many contemporary Christian circles, the notion that every believer should, or even must, speak in tongues and that failure to do so is disobedience or evidence of a lesser experience of the Spirit has become a widely accepted truth, often causing anxiety or confusion for those who do not. However, a closer examination of scripture and the very nature of God's design reveals a more nuanced and intentional distribution of spiritual gifts. This essay will argue that, based on scriptural principles and God's design, we should not expect or demand that all believers speak in tongues. In essence, scripture teaches neither the universal possession nor the universal obligation of this gift.

In recent times, there has been an underlying assumption that every believer has every spiritual gift. The argument in favour of this has been that, since the believer has the Spirit of God, it follows that the believer has all the gifts present in the Spirit. A good analogy to demonstrate this claim is that, if a person is given a house, then everything in it is theirs as well. This analogy works especially if the gift is inanimate and or material. However, in the case of a being or person, the logic fails. As such, this erroneous claim that we have all the gifts of the Spirit is primarily due to a poor understanding of the third person of the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit is a person, not an impersonal energy or force. This means the Holy Spirit has a will and mind of his own. In John 14:16, when Jesus refers to the sending of another comforter, he uses the word "allos," which means "another of the same kind," referring to a kind like himself in this context. If the Spirit were to be of another kind or category, the appropriate adjective would be "Heteros," which means "another of a different kind." As such, he is very much like Jesus. Throughout scripture the Holy Spirit is consistently portrayed as a divine person, one who speaks (Acts 13:2), decides (1 Cor 12:11), searches and knows (1 Cor 2:10-11), is grieved (Eph 4:30), intercedes (Rom 8:26), teaches and guides (John 14:26; 16:13), commands (Acts 16:6-7), and can even be lied to (Acts 5:3-4). These are personal actions and attributes, not those of an impersonal force. This implies that upon the indwelling of the Spirit in the believer, the Spirit's personhood is not suspended. For if the Spirit is robbed of his personhood, then the work of the Spirit as a "guide" and "helper" becomes impossible, as you cannot "guide" and "help" a person if you do not have a will and mind of your own.

Therefore, by understanding the Spirit's sovereign will, we should not assume that all believers possess every gift simply because the Spirit indwells them. The indwelling of the Spirit does not eliminate the Spirit's divine nature. For if we have all the gifts, we should also have all the Spirit's attributes using that same logic. No believer is referred to as omniscient, sovereign, or omnipotent by virtue of the indwelling of the Spirit; no believer has all the gifts of the Spirit by virtue of the indwelling of the Spirit. In fact, Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:11 asserts that it is the Spirit that apportions each gift to each person. Because the Spirit has its will, mind, and purpose, he alone can determine who gets what gift. If the Spirit gives gifts as he pleases, it would mean that the giving of the gifts will be unequally distributed. This understanding of the Spirit's sovereignty directly impacts our interpretation of Paul's instruction to 'desire' spiritual gifts.

There is a common misinterpretation of the word "desire" as used by Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14 that needs clarification before we proceed. The word "desire" does not in any way imply the possession or automatic acquisition of what is being desired. The use of the word desire in itself already suggests two things. First, a lack of what is desired, and secondly, a thirst or yearning to satisfy the said lack. Desiring a car does not mean you have one, nor is it a guarantee you ever will. As such, Paul's use of the word "desire" when he says we should desire spiritual gifts already suggests that we do not have them until they are given to us.

Hence, the desire does not impose or imply an automatic gain. It is simply a yearning for a thing. So when Paul says to "desire" spiritual gifts, he is encouraging believers to long earnestly and be open to God's distribution of his gifts. As such, if God, the giver of gifts, is more than willing to share his gift, we may be found wanting, eagerly and earnestly ready to receive. For if we have the gifts already, "desire" will be a very wrong choice of word, as one does not desire that which he has. While Paul instructs believers to desire spiritual gifts, this instruction should not be interpreted as a universal promise that every individual will receive every gift, still less that tongues in particular is the gift we should all pursue above others. Therefore, the desire itself cannot be twisted into a 'should', a divine obligation for every believer. This understanding that not all will receive every gift, and that the Spirit distributes them as He wills, reflects a deeper truth about God's character and design. Far from being an arbitrary limitation, this pattern of diverse distribution mirrors the very nature of God Himself and His creative work.

God has woven both distinction and diversity into creation, and we catch the first glimpse of that pattern in God Himself. Ontologically, the persons of the Godhead are distinct, Father, Son, and Spirit, sharing one essence, one will, one divine life. Yet in the story of redemption, these same persons step into diverse but inseparable roles where the Father sends, the Son accomplishes our salvation, and the Spirit brings that work home to us. In the Godhead, we see this richness, this complexity, and multifacetedness that no one can ever fully comprehend. This distinction and diversity seem to permeate even God's creation, or, better put, creation is a reflection of the distinction present in the Godhead.

God created different kinds of light (sun, moon, stars), various forms of vegetation (shrubs, trees, flowering plants), different categories of animals (aerial, terrestrial, aquatic), and humanity itself, male and female, with distinct features and complementary roles. We also see diversity in the church. Some are apostles, some prophets, some work miracles, others excel at administration. In the same church, we see the old and the young; the slave and the free; the rich and the poor. With this pattern of diversity across different levels and strata of creation, diversity in spiritual gifts will not be an accident. This is the point Paul was making in 1 Corinthians 12. As such, different people have different gifts as distributed by the Spirit of God. Moreover, the body-part analogy cements Paul's thesis on the diversity and distribution of the gifts by the Spirit of God. The same way we have different parts is the same way we have different gifts in different people, all for the edifying of the church. Hence, Paul's question: "Are all Apostles?" No. Are all Prophets? No. Do all work miracles? No. Do all speak in tongues? No. Why? For if all are Apostles, who will be prophets? If all work miracles, who will need Miracles? If all speak in tongues and interpret, why do we need tongues and interpretations? The essence of the gifts themselves is the edification of the church; hence, we have different parts supplying the body. Paul's thesis is that if everyone has everything, then there is no need for the gifts, or better still, no need for the church. Despite designing a diverse world, God also designed his creatures to work together in unity such that one does not overlap into the roles, interests, and desires of the other, and vice versa. How does such a diverse world work together in such harmony? How does the sun not interfere with the moon? How do all the animals benefit from the sun? How about animals and man? As such, God has created the world to be diverse yet to be united. The same way the three different persons of the Godhead are united, is the same way he has created the world, different creatures united to serve one purpose, which is to glorify God.

If every believer had all the gifts of the Spirit, what we would have at best would be uniformity, not unity. Unity is a state of togetherness and harmony where differences are respected and accepted. Uniformity, on the other hand, is the state of being the same with no variation. As such, uniformity seeks to eliminate differences through conformity and sameness, while unity embraces and tolerates these differences. For example, when we say 'uniformity,' think about standardized exams where students of different backgrounds, exposure, abilities, and interests are subject to the same conditions and grading criteria. However, for unity, think of an orchestra where different musicians play different instruments and notes, all working together to create harmonious music. Uniformity in itself is not bad, but in the created order of things, we are made different and are to work together in unity to achieve shared goals and purpose.

God created humanity with intentional diversity, different skill sets, interests, temperaments, physical features, and cultural backgrounds, yet He designed us for unity, not uniformity. This principle of unity-in-diversity is most visible in two institutions: the church and marriage. In the church, people from vastly different circumstances, rich and poor, various ethnicities, slave and free, come together as one body to worship the same God. In marriage, two distinct individuals, each with their own background, strengths, and ways of thinking, are called to become one flesh and build a shared life. This design matters in how we understand spiritual gifts. If God intended for the church to function through uniformity, where every member has the same gifts, then unity itself loses meaning. True unity requires difference, as it is the harmonious cooperation of distinct parts toward a common purpose. Paul makes this clear in Ephesians 4:13 that the church's goal is "to attain the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God." Unity of faith, not uniformity of gifts. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul's entire argument rests on the idea that we are united in mission and purpose precisely because our gifts, roles, and functions differ. The body analogy only makes sense if diversity is intentional. If every believer had every gift, the analogy and Paul's point would collapse. Suppose God designed the church to operate through diverse gifts rather than uniformity (1 Cor 12:18). In that case, insisting that every believer must speak in tongues is not spiritual zeal but a functional rebellion against God's own blueprint for His body, demanding uniformity where He has ordained unity in diversity.

Based on the proceedings so far, it implies that tongues is not a universal gift common to every believer, as only a select few have the gift of speaking in tongues. This is evident in the scriptures as of approximately 13 individual or group conversion accounts in Acts, only two explicitly mention tongues (Acts 10:46, 19:6). The only other occurrence is the unique Pentecost event in Acts 2, which represents the inaugural outpouring rather than a normative conversion pattern. As such, Luke is deliberate with his language, as whenever tongues matter for the narrative, he highlights them clearly. The fact that he does not mention tongues in most conversion accounts shows that he does not treat it as a normative expectation for every believer. As such, having three occurrences of tongues shows that tongues is in the minority and is not a pattern for every believer. Luke records approximately 13 distinct conversion accounts or events in Acts: the conversions in Acts 2:38-41; 8:12-17 (Samaritans); 8:26-39 (Ethiopian); 9:1-19 (Paul); 10:44-48 (Cornelius); 13:48-49 (Pisidian Antioch); 16:14-15 (Lydia); 16:25-34 (Philippian jailer); 17:34 (Athens); 18:8 (Corinth); 18:24-28 (Apollos); and 19:1-7 (Ephesian disciples). Of these, only three mention tongues: Acts 2 (Pentecost), 10 (Cornelius), and 19 (Ephesus).

Additionally, tongues receive remarkably little attention in the New Testament outside of Luke's historical accounts and Paul's corrective teaching in 1 Corinthians. Luke gave a very descriptive account of tongues in his accounts in the book of Acts. As mentioned earlier, it was not a normative experience for all believers. Paul speaks of tongues, but first, he was not very prescriptive about how to use them; second, he taught the subject of tongues as subordinate to prophecy. Jesus also mentions that one of the signs of those who have believed would be speaking in new tongues (Mark 16:17-18). However, this passage actually reinforces rather than contradicts our argument. First, the signs are plural and diverse: tongues, casting out demons, handling serpents, immunity to poison, and healing. No one argues that every believer must demonstrate all five signs, yet if tongues were truly universal and obligatory, consistency would require the same of the others. Second, the passage describes signs that 'will accompany' believers (plural, corporate), not signs that each believer must manifest. The body collectively displays these signs as the Spirit distributes them.

If tongues were a required part of our individual Christian life, why is so little said about it? The New Testament is very clear about the required aspects of our Christian life, such as walking in love, praying, staying faithful, etc., and these are emphasised by most, if not all, of the writers. The same cannot be said of tongues. In fact, five verses after telling us to desire gifts, Paul explicitly says, 'I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy' (14:5). Importantly, Paul is not issuing a command here but expressing a personal wish, the Greek word translated 'want' means to will or desire, not to mandate. The same apostle who encourages believers to 'desire' spiritual gifts immediately ranks tongues lower than prophecy and then asks, 'Do all speak in tongues?' expecting 'No.'

Given the sovereign distribution of the Spirit (1 Cor 12:11), the deliberate diversity God has built into His church (12:4-30), and the clear priority Paul places on intelligible, edifying gifts over tongues (14:1-19), the answer must be No, we should not all speak in tongues, nor should any believer be taught that they must. To demand tongues of every Christian is to undermine the very purpose of spiritual gifts, which is for the building up of a diverse yet unified body in which each member serves the others with the gifts the Spirit has sovereignly chosen to give.
